Acupressure |
In this day and age of evidence based medicine
there are many investigations and major research into both complementary
and orthodox medicine.
Researchers from National Taiwan University
carried out research into comparing acupressure with
physiotherapy involving manipulation of the spine and the use of
heat and exercise.
In a random controlled trial a group of 129
patients suffering with chronic low back pain were split into two
groups, one receiving six sessions of acupressure and the other
receiving six sessions of physiotherapy.
The researchers found that acupressure resulted
in an 85% reduction in disability compared to those who received
the physiotherapy. Moreover these benefits were still evident at
six months. Improvements were also seen in leg pain, less
interference from pain during work and less time taken off work.
All assessors were blind to which patient had received which
treatment.
